Challenger Report
Chart of the Week for February 1, 2019 - February 7, 2019
Challenger, Gray, and Christmas is an executive outsourcing firm that compiles job cut announcements from press releases and sums the number of individuals affected on a monthly basis. The chart above shows the number of job cuts from January 2018 through January 2019.
The January 2019 report showed 52,998 workers affected by job cuts, a 21% increase from December 2018 and a 19% increase year-over-year. Economists noted retailers accounted for the largest share of the January cuts (42%) in part because Gymboree announced a store closing plan. Economists further note that the main reasons for job cuts have been bankruptcy, restructuring, store closings, and cost cutting. Weaker demand for employees does not appear to be a factor. Economists expect the strong job gains from 2018 to carry forward to the new year, but at a slower pace.
