NFIB Small Business Survey
Chart of the Week for December 22, 2017 - December 28, 2017
NFIB publishes a monthly seasonally adjusted index (NFIB Small Business Survey) that is derived from a large sample of its small business members. Among the 10 topics included in the survey are: plans to increase employment, plans to make capital expenditures, expect economy to improve, current job openings, and is now a good time to expand. Economists see the survey as a good representation of the health of small businesses, which represent about 50 percent of the nation's workforce.
The NFIB Small Business Survey for November 2017 was 107.5, which was the highest result since NFIB began in 1986. The leading components of the survey contributing to the strong November result were: expectations for the economy to improve, expectations for higher sales, at least one job opening was hard to fill, and now is a good time to expand your business. Economists note that increased odds of the passage of tax legislation in the U.S. contributed to November's record survey value, and that November's survey value indicates an annualized Gross Domestic Product growth in excess of 4% for the fourth quarter 2017.
