Lawmakers Reach Spending Deal, Averting a Government Shutdown
December 15, 2015
Late Tuesday, Congressional leaders reached an agreement to fund the federal government through 2016, averting a government shutdown, the Washington Post reported.
The House and Senate are expected to pass the legislation by the end of the week, although lawmakers must first pass another short-term funding bill because current funding authority for most operations expires at midnight on Wednesday.
The $1.1 trillion budget deal includes a broad package of tax breaks worth about $800 billion, according to CNN.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, D-Wis., briefed House Republicans on the deal Tuesday evening, where he "made a compelling case for voting for it," Rep. Reid Ribble, R-Wis., told the Post.
