The HSA-HDHP plans have been great for us. They do have a high deductible, but we have had a fair amount of claims and have met the deductible every year (my wife and I are in our 40s, and have 2 teenage kids). Most years, we have maxed out what we put away in the HSA, which has huge tax advantages (no federal tax on contributions or withdrawals). I also have used the investment services of both Aetna and Altius to invest a large portion of the HSA in equities. I view it as a type of retirement plan, where you are saving for health expenses.
The other thing that is nice about the HSA is that after your balance has built up a bit, you always have money to pay for those medical and related expenses. No more wondering how you will pay for those unexpected bills!
Even though they have a high deductible, and taking that into account, they are still cheaper than traditional health care plans, due to the high premiums of those plans.
I highly recommend the HSA-HDHP, but everyone should of course research it carefully to make sure it is right for them.
