Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Medicare and FEHB?

Jeff,

I have BCBS Basic and Medicare Part A.  My wife had a heart attack and a stroke in October.  She required a stent and a pacemaker as well as extensive therapy.  She was in ICU for 23 days and in the hospital for a total of 28 days.  So far, her medical bills have exceeded $500K.

BCBS covered all of the medical bills except a $100 copay for the ambulance and $875 copay for the hospital.  The $875 was covered by Medicare A.

She has office visit copays for both Primary Care and two cardiologists.

Thanks to all for your comments, appreciated.

After reading through all the material it is still unclear to me the benefit of signing up for Medicare Part B ($150/month) given I have the FEHB BCBS Standard Option insurance.

I see where the extra cost of Medicare Part B ($150/month) combined with the BCBS Basic Option is about the same price as the BCBS Standard Option, but one is limited to only in network providers instead of being free to choose in or out of network providers as with the Standard Option.

Have any of you opted out of Part B and just gone with the FEHB BCBS Standard option instead? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the topic. The  FEHB BCBS Standard option covers all my needs now so I'm not unclear about the benefit to signing up for Part B.

Thanks in advance for sharing your insights.

All the best,

Jeff
