U.S. Internet Retail Sales
Chart of the Week for May 24, 2019 - May 30, 2019
On a quarterly basis the U.S. Census Bureau publishes data concerning Internet Retail Sales, which is defined as sales of goods and services over the internet or other online system. The chart above shows the sales figures for the first quarter of 2018 through the first quarter of 2019.
U.S. Internet Retail Sales continued their strong pace in the first quarter of 2019 with $137.7 billion in total sales. This is a 3.5% gain from the fourth quarter of 2018 and an 12.4% gain year-over-year. Internet Sales continue to take market share from brick and mortar stores as the internet percentage of retail sales increased to 10.2% compared to the year-ago 9.4%. Economists note that Internet Retail Sales have posted gains for 41 consecutive quarters, while total retail sales have sometimes fallen during that period. Researchers also note that brick and mortar store-chains including Dressbarn, CVS, Pier 1, Gap, and other chains have announced more store closings as of May 21, 2019 than were announced in all of 2018.
