So if this is the bear market we see every year, and this bear market, for two consecutive years, has wiped out all of my gains for the year (I didn't even get back to where I was before the last big drop), as of the day before yesterday, how much pain do I tolerate? I'm retired, not contributing, and not planning on touching my TSP until the required minimum distribution forces itself on me in four more years.

FWIW, the worst period of the year (Aug to Oct) is usually followed by the best months of the year.
If you don't need your funds for 4 years, this period should not concern you.
