I don't know how you define "nearing retirement". I am about 4 years out. I have only been a Fed for 10 years and have been putting what I can afford into my TSP, but am not able to max it out. I am 100% S fund and the more we get returns like in the last few years, the "nearer" I am to retirement.
I can't really retire until I am 65 and 3 months (full SS retirement age) but may stay a year longer if my health holds out and I still enjoy what I am doing. I do now, but time will tell.

BTW, Thank you Sarah for all you do.
I'm nearing retirement window, so I moved the bulk to G. A disciplined move after witnessing 2008 co-workers devastated at the doorstep of retirement. Thanks to Sara & participants for this forum so I can make better decisions to suit my situation. Suze Orman's rule of thumb is to make decisions that make you feel safe, decisions made with fear will begin a domino effect of regrettable actions. Less returns in my future, but sleeping quite well.

Moving to G fund because of trade war news is an emotional move. Do not make moves based on the news of the day. Investing for retirement should have long term thinking. The economy is doing well now, with no sign of a recession. Look at the long term historical gains of the S&P 500 and when recessions occurred and you can see the effects.

I am a novice here. As of today I jumped to G fund with all the trade wars. Looks like a bad idea after seeing where everything closed. What is the group doing?
