U.S. Household Wealth
Chart of the Week for June 15, 2018 - June 21, 2018
On a quarterly basis, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board releases a report known as the Financial Accounts of the United States. One subset of that report covers U.S. household wealth, which measures the levels of assets and liabilities for U.S. households and nonprofit institutions. The chart above shows the quarterly dollar value of U.S. household wealth for the past two years.
As the U.S. economy has generally improved over the last two years, so has U.S. household wealth. The first quarter 2018 figure of $100.8 trillion dollars was an increase of 1.1% over the fourth quarter of 2017, and was 15.7% higher than the first quarter of 2016. First quarter 2018 growth was slower than previous quarters due to stock market declines, but was partially offset by rising housing equity. Rising wealth may have positive impacts on the economy.
Economists note that stock market returns are likely to be inconsistent going forward, and rising interest rates may impact home price appreciation, both of which may impact the growth of household wealth in future quarters.
