I am 72 and have been withdrawing my RMD as required, if I died tomorrow this is what I think would happen to my TSP account.
My wife is the primary beneficiary and designated to receive 80% of the account. She will then follow the TSP guidelines spilled out for the primary beneficiary..
One child is designated as a beneficiary for the remaining 20%. My guess is, that TSP will issue a check for that amount, this child can take the funds from that check and roll it into and existing IRA or open a new IRA with no tax implications, someone please inform me if I am delusional.

Hello and thanks to everyone for your valuable insights.  I am retired 5 years and still with the TSP.  I think I understand that if I die, my heirs (my sons) will be required to receive a taxable distribution immediately.  If I move the funds to an outside IRA, the kids can move the funds into their IRA tax free (tax deferred) upon my death.  Do you agree. I'm thinking of moving to Fidelity. Also does anyone know the equivalent fidelity fund to the S fund.  Sorry if this has been asked and answered in the past.
