Chart of the Week for August 18, 2017 - August 24, 2017

The Census Bureau publishes a monthly survey of merchandise sold by establishments primarily engaged in retail trade. Economists consider it an important measure of consumer spending activity. The chart above shows the monthly percentage change in U.S. Retail Sales for the first seven months of 2017.

Retail sales have generally been positive in 2017. July's 0.6% change exceeded economists' expectations and the change for June was revised upward from -0.2% to 0.3%. Some noted sectors with strong growth in July 2017 included Nonstore Retailers (1.3%), Motor Vehicle and Parts (1.2%), and Building Materials (1.2%). Economists noted that the Nonstore Retail numbers were impacted by Amazon Prime day in July, where sales increased 50% in the U.S. from the year before.
