Re: [TSP_Strategy] Trump and the TSP

  • first 2 IFTs in cal month can redistribute money between any of the funds
after that, all other IFTs in that same calendar month can only be to G - and more and more has to go into G each xfer.

I found out a few TSP things this past week that were new to me, that I thought someone might find helpful and that I had not seen posted yet.  This was after speaking on the phone with 2 different TSP Reps (TSP phone number is 877-968-3778).  They are:

1. Investors can make two interfund round trip transfers per month "plus one additional into the G fund".  But the final transfer has to be into the G fund.  That is essentially 3 round trip transfers ending in the G fund.  The first TSP Rep. told me TSP does that in order to provide options for TSP investors  to protect themselves in the event of a precipitous drop.  That was my interpretation of what he said.  A later call with a second Rep corroborated that.
2. The number of transactions resets at the beginning of the next month no matter when the last transaction occurred....it could have executed the last day of the month.  So "per month" means "calendar month", not "every 30 days."  So months will vary between 28, 29 (leap year), 30 and 31.
3. Transfers count when they are "executed", not necessarily when they are "attempted".  So for example, if an interfund transfer is attempted on the last day of any given month, but the transaction actually executes the next day (on the first day of the next month), then the transfer counts as the first transfer of the "next month".
4. 12 noon EST is the cut off for getting an interfund transfer to execute that same day.  I asked if he had ever seen a time when a transfer was ordered before noon EST, but posted on a following day...."even during the huge drop in 2008".  He said NO, pretty emphatically.  However, he said it gets a little "hairy" the closer you get to 12 noon.....that the chances in a delay of one day get more probable.
5. After the maximum interfund transfers occur, apparently the system automatically dis-allows an additional transfer.

The one thing I did not fully understand was the 3rd transfer.  The first Rep told me that the transfer had to be 100% into G.  However, the second Rep implied in his answers that the 3rd transfer had to go into G but I thought he meant less than 100% was allowable.....I will have to find that one out later.

Best,

Nathan Lee
