How about that?! I think this article addresses the question I raised last week -- at least one financial adviser recommends a more aggressive strategy for new contribution allocations to capture shorter term conditions (like depressed S Fund prices since mid August), and a more conservative strategy for current TSP portfolio distribution (to lock in long term gains, limit losses, and buy in at attractive prices).
I'm exactly the sort of "client" that Sturgis refers to below. I'm within 3 years of retirement and the largest element of my current net worth by far is the TSP. I think I'd be quite comfortable making major changes to my contribution allocation as often as it makes sense, and minor or re-balancing adjustments to my account distribution a few times each year. Does that make sense to anyone else?

How do you plan for retirement in a volatile market?
Sturgis: As we are several years into a bull market, we frequently recommend that clients approaching retirement with significant wealth in their TSP consider two allocations: a more conservative one for the wealth they have already built, and another allocation for future contributions, which takes advantage of the market roller coaster. This allows them to not only reduce loss during market declines, but to have a place to draw from to buy into a correction at attractive prices.
