About 'No comment', i want to share an interesting and real time anecdote with members.
Members may recall that a big 5000 crore scam broke out in early 1990s known as 'Harshad Metha Scam'. Mr Ravi Srinivasan (presently Business Editor of Mail Today) and Sucheta Dalal in Times of India broke the story first.
Mr Ravi Srinivasan is a good friend of mine for two decades. He has shared with me as to how the news got released.
Ravi Srinivasan and Sucheta Dalal did extensive investigation about the scam. But they could not get it confirmed by anybody from RBI. Ravi Srinivasan, called one of the senior officials of the RBI over phone and asked the views for his findings. The Senior official of RBI immediately replied to Ravi Srinivasan 'No Comments'.
This gave the confidence to the reporting team, that 'there was something fishy'. Immediately, they wrote a 3 column story and gave to editor and the news was published in TOI the next day. You know, how this news item rocked the whole country, including Parliament. SEBI and other regulatory authoriti es were formed only out of this incident.
The casual 'no comment' by a senior official gave the credibility of the investigation to the reporting team. Till date this remains as the biggest investigative scoop in the Indian business journalism.
Many times, corporate communicators or CEOs do not understand the implications of 'No comments'.
Now with the increasing social media, corporates face more risky situation than before.
