Thanks for bringing this topic into discussion. This is indeed a very important thing that a Trainer should be aware of.
 
My personal understanding as well as experience is, only knowledge and experience are not sufficient to be an effective trainer.
 
The most important thing for a Trainer or a Teacher is to be the embodiment of the teachings he/she is giving. Only when i am first imbibing my own teachings and being the live example of that, the following can happen,
1. I will know whether it is practical to bring into practice or not, and how to make it practically possible.
2. What are the challenges one will face while practicing the same, and means to overcome those.
3. What is the right method to practice it.
4. My teachings need to reflect in my own life and my activities. That is the basic integrity which anyone will nortice and expect too. Only knowing things and talking about it, but not practicing in the personal life is like being an empty vessel. Such teacher talks all big things, but all are hollow noise. But, a knowledgeable and Principled teacher can touch the heart and intellect of the students/audience and impact their lives in very few words. The reason being, his/her life and face speaks.
 
Apart from this, the other factors the trainer needs to take care are,
1. Depth of true knowledge
2. Personal experience
3. Practical and positive approach towards life and the situations that come in life
4. A perfect balance between being Detached and Loving (Offer the knowledge with the best wishes such that the Audience should take the most benefit of it, and then be detached through intellect about the way they implement it, or whether they implement it or not...)
5. More practicals than theory
6. The complete training module needs to be built up gradually towards more into the depth of the Subject in discussion from lighter aspects.
7. The inner most thougths and feelings of the trainner need to be positive and respectful towards the ability of self, towards the implementation of the lessons by the students, and the students themselves.
8. Be an embodiment of Compassion and Empathy. Need to have an open mind. Then the trainer can relate to the issues of the students and offer them what they really need, not what the trainer wants to give.
9. Being completely relaxed from body and mind while on the stage.
 
 
Will share if i come up any more thoughts on this subject.

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Shabbar Suterwala.

I receive many calls / emails from aspiring to be trainers as to what makes a Trainer Effective..?

Training has been and will always remain a passion for me. Having a transition from Software to Softskills in the year 1995 it has been a journey continous learning.. unlearning and re-learning process for me.

Apart from the various additional qualification and certifications what has helped me, it is the actual experience of being in the classroom / training room that has helped me a lot to be successful. Not to forget the crude and rude feedback that I was ready to receive without being defensive or argumentative.

Need to mention one of the comment received even before the training started was ..."this young man.. will he be able to handle my team...". Without being reactive or prejudice about the comment/remark I gave my 200%.

So the point here I wish to make is "What makes a Trainer Effective..? " I am sure every trainer has his/her own formula..!

Is it Knowledge, Skills, Attitude? or.....there is something more...?

Invite views / experiences / suggestions which will help the trainer community some kind of checklist or benchmarks to set for effectiveness.

I intend to compile all the comments - suggestions into a manual form to be used by trainer to be effective with due acknowledgment.
