If you're talking about annuities that will buy your TSP balance in exchange for a fixed annuity, here's how I see it:
Pros:
There really aren't any. You can accomplish almost the same thing by keeping your TSP balance in the G fund. In fact, with the new TSP withdrawal options, the TSP should be even more flexible since you'll be able to decide whether to draw from Roth or Traditional.
Cons:
Statistically, these companies have priced the annuities so that whatever your TSP is worth, they'll skim their profit off the top and then pay you a portion of the value of your TSP over time.
Your TSP will stop growing (well, because you will no longer have a TSP, you've traded it for an annuity)
Did I mention that you'll only be getting a slice of what your TSP was worth?
The argument in favor of annuities is usually in terms of the risk of the market. I don't see the TSP G fund as being that risky. As you might guess, there's no way I would ever buy one of those annuities.
Don't get me started on the scam that is called whole life insurance.
