Re: [LeadersWorkshop] Fwd: NGO - Prerana - any bright students coming from poor financial background

I am with you Gurmeet.  It is known that children from poor families live in the rural villages and slums.  It is also known that they attend only Government schools and one can imagine the quality of performance of such schools when many of them score 0% in SSLC.  I am not sure 80% is meant for children from poor families who are not able to go for tuition, no proper study facilities including books, light and table.  In my experience in this field, there are many children who are willing and able to score even more than 80% but have not had the opportunity.  I think, something need to be done in fixing criteria for offering assistance to the less privilleged.

Hi,
I really appreciate this but if you see on the other side is it necessary that if a child is from a poor family and doesn't score 80% then he's not a bright child, the child wanted to reach high but he has no means to study and unable to get 80% then what, should the child be left in lurch. I don't think this should be a criteria, instead a child who really want's to excel but is from poor family and supported by the society to come up and do something good should be encouraged and inspite of these written tests they should be inteviewed to see the enthusiasm in them and the problems they face to nurture that enthusiasm.
We still are going by the same age old system of putting thresholds of percentage's like in engineering colleges as shown in the movie '3 Idiots'. If he scores 79% and from a poor family so he is not encouraged by this NGO, strange!!

Best Regards,
Gurmeet

Dear All,

If you have come across any bright students coming from poor financial background who have finished their 10th standard this year (April 2010) and scored more than 80%, please ask them to contact the NGO-Prerana (supported by Infosys foundation). The NGO is conducting a written test and those who clear the test will be eligible for financial help for their further studies. Please ask the students to contact the people mentioned below to get the form:
