U.S. Regional Employment July 2016
Chart of the Week for August 26, 2016 - September 1, 2016
On a monthly basis, along with its report on national employment, the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases employment data on nine separate regions as well. The data is gathered from sample surveys of businesses in the regions, and some states also report employment estimates in finer detail. The chart above shows the year-over-year percentage change in nonfarm employment growth by region for July 2016, a period during which the national unemployment rate fell from 5.3% to 4.9%.
The Pacific (2.5%) and Mountain (2.4%) regions showed the largest yearly percentage change in July, helped by Idaho (3.4%), Oregon (3.3%), and Utah (3.1%), which were three of the top four states leading the employment gains during the period. The month of July 2016 represented the second consecutive month of job growth across all nine regions, with July's 274,000 net new jobs only slightly less than June's 280,000 net new jobs. Also in July 2016, 20 states had unemployment rates lower that the national rate, 14 states and the District of Columbia had higher jobless rates than the national rate, and 16 states had jobless rates not appreciably different from the national rate.
