Dear Friends, Is labour trouble back with a bang? If the violent incidents of workers in recent times resulting into gruesome murder of Graziano CEO at Noida, riot of Honda workers, VP-HR of Pricol and a worker death due to two groups clash at Gurgaon and violent strike of about one lakh Auto Industries workers of Gurgaon-Manesar hub are considered collectively, its presence is felt leading to disruption of work, production loss and loss of human life too. It is unfortunate that in post liberalisation era, requiring a sea change in thought process of both management and workmen has not happened so far. The real problem lies in the perception. When workers ask for wage revision, better facilities and communicate their grievance through some means at workplace, management terms it as indiscipline and when management take corrective measures to ensure hire productivity and ask workers to give their best, unions term it as exploitation. Both have to change their way, they see & engage with each other replacing conflict with cooperation. Growing incidents of labour unrest in recent past have also turned spot-light on HR professionals and their competence to handle such situation intelligently so that both poles come closer with warm hand shake.
