Re: [LeadersWorkshop] Fw:~~ Attitude of students - Need for good Business Communication skills

Hi Narren!!!
To Introduce myself to this group this is Sathya.
Am working as a Jr. Hr Manager for a number of companies and heading a few companies in chennai as Operations Head.
I went through the mail.
It is quite annoying to see youngsters responding this lathegic way to the mails.
I agree to your point that the Schools, colleges  & Institutions will have to have sessions on Letter writing too to help the upcoming Graduates and freshers atleast attempt to write mails and letters which are fit to be read.
I receive loads of mails daily of the same sort. I sometimes pity them, sometimes annoyed. But Can't help these candidates who are not fit to write mails and letters.
Regards
Sathya

Re: [LeadersWorkshop] need advice for dip in psychology

Dear Deepali

Just a small comment and advice. When you write Psychology you need not write Behavioural in bracket. Psychology means behavioural as it defined as science of human behaviour. Thanks and hope you will not take my comment as offensive.

More Human Than Human
by Jay Cross

The future is people, not technology.

Ten years ago, venture capital firms issued lengthy reports explaining why e-learning would take the world by storm. Their underlying economic argument was cost-cutting: less travel, fewer facilities and no more salary expense for instructors. It was a classic industrial age proposition: Replace humans with machines. That first round of e-learning largely failed for precisely this reason. You can't remove the humans from learning.

Companies should embrace network-supported informal learning because it works better, not because it reduces labor costs. People learn more efficiently at the time of need, in the context of work, from people in the know and through virtual conversation.

When my colleagues and I advocate cutting back on workshops and classes in favor of building "learnscapes," we aren't suggesting firing the instructors. Rather, we recommend redeploying them in new capacities, serving as connectors, wiki gardeners, internal publicists, news anchors and performance consultants.

There's no cookie-cutter formula for assigning these new roles and responsibilities. An active community of practice is a different animal from a bottom-up knowledge management network or a corporate news channel. New communities have different requirements than old.

In their book Digital Habitats: Stewarding Technology for Communities, Etienne Wenger, Nancy White and John Smith describe different community orientations in terms of meetings, open-ended conversation, projects, content, access to expertise, relationships, individual participation, community cultivation and service context.

Digital Habitats posits the role of the community technology steward. Technology stewards are people with enough experience of the workings of a community to understand its technology needs and enough experience with technology to take leadership in addressing those needs.

A steward's initial task is to shape a vision consistent with the community's orientations. The steward then selects the simplest technology to advance the community as both the technology and the organization progress.

Digital Habitats also assigns these duties to the technology steward:

a) Bringing new members up to speed with the community's technology.
b) Identifying and spreading good technology practices.
c) Supporting community experimentation.
d) Assuring continuity across technology disruptions.
e) "Keeping the lights on" (including backups, permissions, vendor payments and domain registrations) .

TogetherLearn's Clark Quinn sees the need for a learnscape architect who nurtures the health of the learning network for collaboration, communication and learning opportunities. More a leader than a technician, the learnscape architect is the network champion who carries the vision, monitors metrics, promotes network participation and encourages continuous experimentation.

Mzinga's Dave Wilkins describes several production roles. Producers manage the contributions of others, drawing out the best in them while also opting not to include contributions that aren't as good. Moderators help ensure an environment of high trust by ensuring that people play by the rules. Expert moderators may vet the accuracy and clarity of information in their domains. Yet other moderators seed discussions to channel conversations in ways that might provide insight to the organization. Reporters and bloggers unearth what is newsworthy and document it for the community.

These tasks won't happen by themselves. Furthermore, people throughout the organization will need to share the burden of helping everyone learn. Distributing learning throughout the social fabric of an organization requires storytellers, mentors, bloggers, community elders, schedulers and editors. We're all in this together.

Some instructors will continue to instruct, but they will increasingly do so with network support and in smaller bursts. It's a better use of their time. Face-to-face instruction packs a punch but is difficult to scale. Economics dictate that traditional instruction will play a diminishing role in corporate learning.

Traditional instructors and instructional designers are ideally suited to excel in these roles. They understand how adults learn and how to transform information into learning. It's important for corporations to benefit from their learning people, not give them pink slips.

[LeadersWorkshop] Re: ~~~~~.Nice story.... Your Gift, Your Strengths!

[LeadersWorkshop] Re: ~~~~~.Nice story.... Your Gift, Your Strengths!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~..nice..Story..~~~
A married lady was expecting a birthday gift from her husband. For many months she had admired a beautiful diamond ring in a showroom, and knowing her husband could afford it, she told him that was all she wanted.
As her birthday approached, this lady awaited signs that her husband had purchased the diamond ring. Finally, on the morning of her birthday, her husband called her into his study room. Her husband told her how proud he was to have such a good wife, and told her how much he loved her. He handed her a beautiful wrapped gift box..
Curious, the wife opened the box and found a lovely; leather- bound Bible, with the wife's name embossed in gold. & angrily, she raised her voice to her husband and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible? And stormed out of the house, leaving her husband.
Many years passed and the married lady was very successful in business! She managed to settle for a more beautiful house and a wonderful family, but realized her ex-husband was very old, and thought perhaps she should go to visit him. She had not seen him for many years.
But before she could make arrangements, she received phone call telling her that her ex-husband had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to her. She needed to come back immediately and take care of things.
When she arrived at her ex-husband's house, sudden sadness and regret filled her heart. She began to search through her ex-husband's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as she had left it years ago with tears; she opened the Bible and began to turn the pages.
Her ex-husband had carefully underlined a verse, Matthew 7:11, "And if you, being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Heavenly Father which is in heaven, give to those who ask Him? As she read those words, a tiny package dropped from the back of the Bible.
It had a diamond ring with her name engraved on it, the same diamond ring which she saw at the showroom. On the tag was the date of her birth, and the words...'LUV U ALWAYS'... How many times do we miss God's blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?
Do not spoil what strengths you have by desiring what you do not have ; but remember that what strengths you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.
IF YOUR GIFT OF STRENGTHS IS NOT PACKAGED THE WAY YOU WANT IT, IT'S BECAUSE IT IS BETTER PACKAGED THE WAY IT IS!
ALWAYS APPRECIATE LITTLE STRENGTHS WITHIN YOU; THEY USUALLY LEAD YOU TO BIGGER THINGS.
[LeadersWorkshop] Fw: ~~~~~~... The Art of Giving
[LeadersWorkshop] Fw: ~~~~~~... The Art of Giving
 The Art of Giving
The Art of Giving.
"Rivers do not drink their own water, nor do tree eat their own fruit,
nor do rain clouds eat the grains reared by them. The wealth of the
noble is used solely for the benefit of others" Even after accepting
that giving is good and that one must learn to give, several questions
need to be answered.
The first question is: When should one give?
We all know the famous incident from Mahabharat.
Yudhisthir,asks a beggar seeking alms to come the next day. On this,
Bhim rejoices, thatYudhisthir his brother, has conquered death! For he
is sure that he will be around tomorrow to give.Yudhisthir gets the
message. One does not know really whether one will be there tomorrow
to give!
The time to give therefore is now.
The next question is: How much to give?
One recalls thefamous incident from history. Rana Pratap was reeling
after defeat from the Moghals. He had lost his army, he had lost his
wealth, and most important he had lost hope, his will to fight. At
that time in his darkest hour, & nbsp; his erstwhile minister Bhamasha
came seeking him and placed his entire fortune at the disposal of Rana
Pratap. With this, Rana Pratap raised an army and lived to fight
another day.
Give as much as you can!
The next question is: What to give?
It is not only money that can be given. I tcould be a flower or even a
smile. It is not how much one gives but how one gives that really
matters. When you give a smile to a stranger, that may be the only
good thing received by him in days and weeks!
You can give anything but you must give with your heart!
One also needs answer to this question: Whom to give to?
Many times we avoid giving by finding fault with the person who is
seeking. However, being judgmental and rejecting a person on the
presumption that he may not be the most deserving is not justified.
Give without being judgmental!
Next we have to answer: How to give?
Coming to the manner of giving, one has to ensure that the receiver
does not feel humiliated, nor the giver feels proud by giving. Charity
without publicity and fanfare is the highest form of charity.
Give quietly!
While giving let not the recipient feel small or humiliated. After all
what we give never really belonged to us. We come to this world with
nothing and will go with nothing.The thing gifted was only with us for
a Temporary period. Why then take pride in giving away something which
really did not belong to us?Give with grace and with a feeling of
gratitude. What should one feel after giving?
We all know the story of Eklavya. When Dronacharya asked him for his
right thumb as "Guru Dakshina" he unhesitatingly cut off the thumb and
gave it to Dronacharya. There is a little known sequel to this story.
Eklavya was asked whether he ever regretted the act of giving away his
thumb.He replied, and the reply has to be believed to be true, as it
was asked to him when he was dying: His reply was "Yes! I regretted
this only once in my life. It was when the Pandavas were coming in to
kill Dronacharya who was broken hearted on the false news of death of
his son Ashwathama and had stopped fighting. It was then that I
regretted the loss of my thumb. If the thumb was there, no one could
havedared hurt my GURU
The message to us is clear:
Give and never regret giving!
(There is also the lesson from Dronacharya's life – he asked for so
much that it killed him in the end.)
And the last question is:
How much should we provide for our heirs?
Ask yourself, 'arewe taking away from them the gift of work'? - A
source of happiness!
The answer is given by Warren Buffett:
Leave your kids enough to do anything,but not enough to do nothing!
In learning the Art of Giving,I would conclude by quoting Sant Kabir:
"When the wealth in the house increases, When water fills aboat, Throw
them out with both hands! "
This is the wise thing to do.
[LeadersWorkshop] Fw:~~~ Humility as leadership Quality
[LeadersWorkshop] Fw:~~~ Humility as leadership Quality
 Humility as leadership Quality
Humility as a Leadership Trait
Tags:Delegation, Leadership, Leadership development
Want to demonstrate that you have what it takes to be an effective leader and have people follow your direction?
Be humble!
That lesson echoed with me as I read a David Brooks column in the New York Times in which he describes listening to an archival recording of "Command Performance, " a radio variety show originally broadcast on V-J Day. Celebrities abounded but according to Brooks, "the most striking feature of the show was its tone of self-effacement and humility." Victory was welcome but marked with dignity.
Leaders who want to inspire followership, and I use the word "inspire" deliberately, need to demonstrate not simply their accomplishments but their character. Take pride in what you have done, but use it as a platform to bring people together to do greater things, e.g. increase sales, improve quality, or save the planet. Use your leadership for something other than self-aggrandizement .
A sense of humility is essential to leadership because it authenticates a person's humanity. We humans are frail creatures; we have our faults. Recognizing what we do well, as well as what we do not do so well, is vital to self-awareness and paramount to humility. Here are some ways to demonstrate humility in the workplace.
Temper authority. Power comes with rank but you don't have to pull it to make it work for you. You can encourage others to make decisions by delegating authority and responsibility. Encourage your people to write their own performance objectives and set team goals. Allow them to make decisions. Your authority comes in the form of imposing order and discipline.
Look to promote others. Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman note in their seminal text, First, Break All the Rules, that a characteristic of successful managers is their ability to promote others, sometimes to positions higher than their own. Such managers are talent groomers, they are ones upon whose leadership success of the enterprise rests.
Acknowledge what others do. Few have said it better than legendary Alabama coach, Paul "Bear" Bryant. "If anything goes bad, I did it. If anything goes semi-good, we did it. If anything goes really good, then you did it. That's all it takes to get people to win football games for you." Practice that attitude always, especially when things are not going well, and your team will rally together because they want you to succeed. In short, humility breeds humility.
Can you be too humble in the workplace? Yes. If you fail to put yourself, or more importantly your ideas, forward, you will be overlooked. Chances for promotion will evaporate, but worse you will not give anyone a reason to believe in you. All of us need not lead others, but those who do seek to influence, to change, to guide, and to lead their organizations, need to find ways to get noticed. Again humility comes to the rescue. That is, if you celebrate team first, self second, people will notice what you and your team have achieved.
And once more, let me return to Brook's column in which he cites a passage from Ernie Pyle who had been killed in action in the Pacific months before in anticipation of victory. "We won this war because our men are brave and because of many things — because of Russia, England and China and the passage of time and the gift of nature's material. We did not win it because destiny created us better than all other peoples."
In today's corporate speak we might say we had a diverse team with ample resources and we are thankful for the opportunity to compete. But I prefer Pyle's closing admonishment. "I hope that we are more grateful than we are proud."
