U.S. Personal Income
Chart of the Week for August 3, 2018 - August 9, 2018
The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes data monthly on U.S. Personal Income that measures income received from employment (including self-employment), investments and transfer payments. The chart above shows Personal Income over the past year.
For June 2018, Personal Income increased by 0.4%, which was the same as the increase in May 2018. Economists noted that increases in wages and salaries were among the primary drivers of the June report, increasing by $31.5 billion at annual rate in June following a $28 billion increase in May. Economists have been watching the wage growth numbers closely as the job market has strengthened, with some economists feeling wage levels have not increased commensurate with the growing jobs reports. The combination of a stronger Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimate for the second quarter of 2018, a continuing strong labor market, and these recent gains in wages and salaries have some economists believing that wage growth will continue to improve over the near term.
