S&P 500 Index Sector Performance (as of 03/31/16)
Chart of the Week for April 15, 2016 - April 21, 2016

Similar to the stock market as a whole, returns for individual sectors of the stock market experience fluctuations. For example, a sector may outperform other sectors for a period of time and then underperform in subsequent periods. The chart above compares the performance of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index ("S&P 500"), including dividends, to its ten underlying sectors for the twelve month periods ended March 31, 2016 ("current" period) and March 31, 2015 ("prior" period). The S&P 500 is an index consisting of 500 companies representing larger capitalization stocks traded in the U.S. and is a benchmark commonly used to measure the performance of the U.S. stock market.
The S&P 500 gained 1.78% for the current period. Six of the ten sectors posted positive returns, with three of those six sectors having double digit returns. In comparison, the S&P 500 gained 12.73% for the prior period, and nine of the ten sectors posted positive returns.
The six sectors that outperformed the S&P 500 in the current period were led by Telecom Services (+18.74%), Utilities (+15.96%), Consumer Staples (11.43%), Information Technology (8.06%), Consumer Discretionary (6.75%), and Industrials (3.21%). Three sectors that underperformed the S&P 500 in the current period, Financials (-4.55%), Health Care (-5.18%), and Materials (-6.00%) all had positive returns in the prior period. Energy was the only sector that posted negative returns in both periods, as falling oil prices impacted the sector.
Market and sector returns fluctuate from year to year depending upon a variety of factors, which are very difficult to forecast. Therefore, it is important to understand the principles of investing before establishing an investment strategy to help ensure that it is consistent with your personal goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon.
