Re: [TSP_Strategy] Re: Stocks Are A Buy

I've been trading stocks close to 30 years.  This isn't anything I haven't seen before.  I like Sarah's strategy which is why I subscribe to this group.

If you're freaking out over this downturn you shouldn't be in equities.

To hear people say they don't care that their portfolios are down over 20 percent or more since the high last August of 1141 is maddening.   It takes all of ten seconds to move your funds in an interfund  transfer.   To cheer or rationalize the fall of the s fund over the last several months, hoping it will go back up isn't an investment strategy.   We all should read the disclaimer on all of these emails.

For me this is rather simple.  I'm in this for the long haul (15 to 20 years) so I honestly could care less what happens in the short term.  I know the market will eventually come back.  Once I'm within a few years of needing the money I'll start playing closer attention to market swings.

I think it's just a matter of managing whatever risk you're personally willing to take so you can sleep well at night... and/or how soon you may need the money..

Erick, sounds like a well reasoned and balanced approach, seeking reasonable growth while managing risk.
How often do you expect to do transfers?
How much of your portfolio do you move with each transfer?

I believe that as a part of a strategy we must have discipline and not to be emotional about it. I like to pre-set how much I am willing to loose and for me was 5%, is when I moved 100% to the G fund. Now I am using the oil prices and watching closely the 200, 30 and 10 moving average of the S&P500 to get back to C. When the small Caps are not considered overvalued I'll move to the S fund  long term but I (and most articles) don't see that happening anytime soon. Short term I'll be between G and C and trading more often that what I'd like but I don't see a better strategy.  I may loose some of the initial bouncing but I am not looking to find the bottom and the top, I will follow where the cash flow is going. It worked for me last year and this year does not seems too different.

I'm watching and reading.  Thanks to all of for the various perspectives.  Even if I'm not thrilled with how things are going it's quite entertaining and educating to read all this.
