This Week's Topic: 5 Powerful Questions for Self-Discovery I believe life lessons that foster personal growth are all around us. Some time ago, I spent a few days in beautiful Arizona - part business, part pleasure. While hiking with a friend to the top of Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona, I stopped to take a break and absorb the beauty of the moment. I sat in the middle of what appeared to formerly have been an impressive and dramatic waterfall. No water remains, only streaks where water once ran over the bold, red rocks that cascade down the side of the mountain. The only sound I could hear was the wind brushing past me and my eyes were captivated with a vivid and spectacular view that I can only describe as Divine. I savored the moment with quiet meditation. I returned from Arizona inspired to schedule more time in my life enjoying nature and places with natural beauty - a joy that has always resonated with my spirit, but not necessarily with my schedule. As I thought about what I might share with you in this column, it occurred to me that all of us can get to know ourselves better by asking ourselves questions about what we want, what is important and who is important to us. My trip brought home the importance of beauty and nature in my life. For you, it may be something completely different, yet with a similar ability to bring peace and joy to your spirit. I would like to share with you five powerful questions for self-discovery. I believe you will find them useful in your journey to creating your ideal life - a life of fulfillment, joy and growth. 1. Why am I here? This question gets to the core of your life mission. Every experience, every contact and every gift or talent that you have exists to support you in accomplishing your mission in life. If you are alive, you are here for a purpose. What will be the most important mark you make on the world? 2. What would I like to learn? The most interesting people are those with a diversity of perspectives and experiences. Life is a learning journey. The more we learn, the more we grow... and the richer and deeper our life experience. Make a list of things you'd like to learn and make plans to learn them. Be willing to try something new, something that takes you outside of your comfort zone. 3. What brings me joy? Often it is the simple things that bring us the most joy. Make a list of the things that bring you joy, then begin incorporating those things into your life on a daily basis. Don't wait for a special occasion to purposefully make your life joyful. You deserve joy every day. 4. What am I most afraid of? Fear can be our enemy, if we allow it to be. Fear also can be a great teacher and a catalyst for change. For example, fear that you will fail can motivate you to be creative and work hard so that you succeed. On the other hand, fear can keep you from living your highest potential if your fear paralyzes you from moving forward in your life. Once you identify your fear, you can begin determining ways to reduce the risk that your fear presents. Once you make the decision to overcome your fear, you find your fears are often more perception than reality. As a result, you fear less in your life than ever before. 5. What is one step I can take today to move closer to my ideal life? Taking a step towards your dreams will generate excitement for the possibilities available to you. Write a vision of your ideal life and then move towards it one step at a time. Celebrate your steps along the way. Consider that following rules and tradition is not a prerequisite to success. Open your mind to creating your own opportunities - it's what I call "entrepreneurial thinking." I hope these questions give you some fabulous "food for thought" and perhaps serve as a catalyst to move you forward in a key area of your life.

You're the Greatest When I was a child I had many sports heroes. I was born in 1957 so I was a big fan of Lombardi's Green Bay Packers of the 1960's. I can vividly remember watching each play of the famous Ice Bowl game with my father and brother. I remember sobbing painfully when I thought that my beloved Packers would lose that game and I also remember celebrating ecstatically as Bart Starr snuck into the end zone to score the winning touchdown. What a feeling!
Another hero of my early years was Cassius Clay. Many of you young people would know him as Muhammad Ali. Clay was a brazen, skillful, fast as lightning heavyweight boxer. Crowds admired him for his skills, but despised him for his bravado and cockiness. Many watched him because they wanted to see him lose.
Did you know?
Cassius Clay was a quiet, unassuming young man in his early boxing career. That would all change the night that he went to see a professional wrestling show featuring Gorgeous George. George was as loud, arrogant, and irreverent as anyone Clay had ever seen. He realized immediately that there was a certain amount of self- promotion missing from his act. Clay noticed George's display and also noticed that the arena was full to the rafters. There were 5000 people in the arena. Clay's biggest crowd to that time was 1500. That would change very soon. It was at that wrestling event that Cassius Clay became "The Greatest." Clay realized that even though he was blessed with amazing boxing skills, he would have to change his presentation and his way of thinking if he were to become the popular success that he envisioned himself to be.
You must understand that Clay/Ali was a very intelligent man and a student of the power of visualization and of positive self talk. He was who he was, as good as he was, because he gave himself permission to be and he believed strongly in the power of his visualizations.
You've all seen one or all of the Rocky movies by now. You've watched as Rocky runs up the many stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Arts. As he reaches the top of the stairs he throws his arms into the air a symbol of triumph and his readiness to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world. What a great symbol. Any idea where the hands over head in celebration came from? You guessed it, Muhammad Ali.
"I am the Greatest"
Whether you're a champion athlete or you're an average guy or gal who has big dreams and wants to be a champion, you can kick your subconscious mind into gear by seeing yourself as a winner in whatever endeavor you want to achieve championship status in.
Here's a few tips:
1. Close your eyes and see yourself with arms raised in celebration before whatever contest you might enter. Do the work and visualize yourself winning regularly and you'll be pleasantly surprised by how often it becomes reality
2. Say the words to yourself (say them out loud)
"I will ace this test"
"I am a champion"
"I expect big things of myself"
"I will win"
3. Do it while you're looking in a mirror.
4. Do it everyday for 2-3 minutes 2-3 times per day.
This may feel a bit uncomfortable to you as you start. All good things take time. Don't give up.
Understand this reality- your subconscious mind doesn't know the difference between real and unreal. It will, however, turn your life into that which you consistently think about and focus on. Think as if you already possess the quality that you seek. Your mind is your greatest tool. Utilize it well and fill it with good thoughts and incredible goals.
You too can be "The Greatest"
Make the plan, work the plan-

By Amy Bowles Reyer, Ph.D. "It is better to have loft and lost than to never have loft at all." — Groucho Marx Falling in love is a magical experience that happens between two people. So why do people fall in love? Professor Arthur Aron from State University of New York at Stonybrook has been exploring the dynamics of what happens when two people are falling in love: Q: What motivates people to seek out love? A: Our primary motivation as human beings is to expand the self and to increase our abilities and our effectiveness. One of the ways we accomplish this is through our relationships with other people. We have learned in our research that it is important to feel that you have the ability to be an effective person, especially in our relationships. Q: How does this theory of self-expansion explain the process of falling in love? A: Usually, we fall in love with a person that we find attractive and appropriate for us, but also someone who demonstrates that they are attracted to us. This creates a situation where a great opportunity is open to us for self-expansion. The fact that they are attracted to us offers a significant opportunity — when we perceive this, we feel a surge of exhilaration! Q: Does it always work this way? A: No, an interesting exception to this occurs if we feel badly about ourselves. The process gets thrown off if we can't believe that another persons finds us attractive — like the Groucho Marx joke where we don't want to belong to a club that would have us for a member. We tend to miss out on opportunities for falling in love if we don't feel good about ourselves. Q: What conditions are best for meeting someone and falling in love? A: When you meet someone under conditions that are highly arousing — a political demonstration, turbulence on a plane, a stimulating performance — a time when the body is stirred up and excited, we tend to experience attraction at a heightened level. This effect is well docu mented but the explanations for it are very controversial. I tend to believe that we come to associate the arousal of the situation with this person and our own self-expansion. Q: When do we fall in love? A: Contrary to what most people think, the statistics show that most people fall in love with someone that they have known for a while. People only report falling in love quickly about 1/3 to 40 percent of the time. Of course, this varies from culture to culture. Falling in love happens differently between cultures but it does occur in most cultures. Q: How does our appearance factor into the equation of falling in love? A: This is interesting; we have found that if you are very unattractive, it can hurt you a lot in forming romantic relationships. However, being attractive doesn't help that much. Q: How do you explain that? A: We have found that two important characteristics, kindness and intelligence, are extremely important in the process of falling in love. And attractiveness is not connected to these things. These two attributes are things that people learn about someone from knowing them over time. Intelligence is important in al l aspects of life, especially in love. But kindness is the strongest indicator for a successful long-term relationship. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~
