Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Medicare and FEHB?

Dear TSPStrategy Members,

I want to thank everyone for their responses, I found the information to be very helpful and informative.

I did the cost calculations comparing BCBS Standard and BCBS Basic plus Medicare Part B, and found the costs are almost identical for my situation.

BCBS Standard is $276.19 per month, so is $3314.28 for 12 months.

BCBS Basic is $173.73 per month, so is $2084.76 for 12 months. Add to that Part B costs of $170.10 per month, or $2041.20 annually, and subtract $800 for the premium reimbursement by BCBS Basic, and you get a total cost of $3325.96 annually for BCBS Basic plus Medicare Part B, which is only $11.68 over the cost of BCBS Standard.

The main disadvantage to not taking Medicare Part B appears to the added 10% cost each year to the premium if you wait to sign up for it. What I haven't seen an answer for in what I've read, is if you do sign up for Part B does that lock you in at the standard rate even if you drop Part B at a later time? Or does it just restart adding 10% to the premium as soon as you drop it?

Anyways, thanks again for all the great information!

All the best,

Jeff
