Ideally, you'd want to IFT to the G Fund just before a drop. You sell your C and/or S shares at the high price and when you go back into C/S from G after the market dips, you end up with more shares than you had before. Sounds great, but you'd have to be very lucky for it to work out every time. I quit attemping it about a year ago and just leave my money in 50/50 C/S. My contributions are also set up for 50/50 C/S.
