Non-U.S. Capital Flows to U.S.

Chart of the Week for May 31, 2019 - June 6, 2019

Non-U.S. Capital Flows into the U.S. were negative in March 2019.

The U.S. Treasury Department publishes monthly data on international financial flows including net purchases of U.S. Treasury bonds and notes, government agency bonds, corporate bonds and equities by private foreign investors and foreign financial institutions. The chart above shows the net long-term securities transactions for August 2018 through March 2019.

Outflows totaled $28.4 billion in March 2019, a reversal from the February 2019 inflows of $51.9 billion, and only the third month of outflows in the last eight. Sales of U.S. equity securities increased to $23.6 billion in March 2019 compared to February's sales of $10.7 billion, as economists noted that foreign private investors may be taking realized gains on U.S. equities as prices have rebounded from late-2018. Economists monitor these flows as trends may impact long-term U.S. interest rates and weak demand for U.S. financial assets may put downward pressure on the value of the U.S. dollar and securities.
