Dear Friends,

A question everybody, who has any interest in HR directly or remotely, is asking that, what went wrong in a plant of such a reputed organization in terms of people management, which made its own employees enemy of other employees? Why Awanish Dev who sacrificed his life for the cause of his profession and the organization wanted to leave the organization few months before this incident?
Industry and HR community has still not come out of the shock from Maruti disaster. A lot has been written on it by psychologists, management experts, employers and even unionists. Every section of society has own view towards the incident, so have we.
One- that whatever might have been the reasons for this inhuman and barbaric act, murder of Awanish cannot be justified by any theory. Violence has no place in any civilized society of Industry where each one comes to earn his bread by discharging his duties. Second-death of a person whosoever he is, should not be undignified by any person under the influence of vested interests. Third- The accused in the case should be simply treated as criminals and not otherwise. Fourth-The mastermind behind this bloody episode should also be exposed and punished who incited the workers to execute the dirty plans. And last-By getting learning from the past we need to re-learn making trouble free future.

Now let us go to larger questions. Last two decades have not produced sufficient skilled IR professionals. This skill of handling people in manufacturing sector lost its shine because organizations thought of it as redundant. Even last seven years' incidents of labour unrest in the country did not prove to be enough for the organizations to pause and rethink. Grappling with "business challenges" and lust of making balance sheet fatter than earlier day did not allow even HR persons to do their job honestly. And what was their job-to add human touch in all decisions. Did we do all that? This is a question for soul searching. From maintaining harmonious Employee relations with sensitivity, HR has been pushed in an era where employee relations were taught to be maintained electronically by technology and not by heart.

Soul searching has to be done from one more angle- Are we fair enough with the working class who is the engine of industrial growth? Are we treating them with dignity and equality?

In spite of writing quick comments on the incident in last issue, which evoked enormous response, BM did not think to put a full stop. We decided to work on this case study to provide academic insights to present HR generation for whom it was like an alien incident. More so, this incident of mindless labour violence will have far reaching consequences on employee relations of Indian business.

This issue cover feature of maruti case study will help readers understand the intricacies of human behavior at workplace and prepare themselves to handle employee relations in a way that leads to workplace harmony with dignity and respect of both partners of business.
