In this context, let me share my
understanding about tendencies:-
Tendencies are like the "iron curtain" which seems to be an almost insurmountable barrier between each individual and God. Each one of us have our ego. If the tendencies are removed, then it will become self-evident to the ego that the ego itself is nothing other than the God. Only through self-discipline can the tendencies in each individual can be exhausted or expurgated.
Tendencies are a bundle of desires. They exert pressure on the mind and intellect to satisfy the desires so that the ego can enjoy and be happy by doing so. Tendencies create desires in the intellect and they in their turn cause agitations of the mind. Man must purge the tendencies and "tune-up" his mind-intellect part of his personality to the Higher in order to achieve his Goal. If the tendencies are eliminated, then the ego will realize that God is the true Self. And this is called Enlightenment.
Lesser the tendencies, lesser will be the pressure on the mind-intellect and thus less and less desires for the worlds of objects-emotions-thoughts!
